2014 Wrap Up

Power of Engineering had a fantastic year in 2014. We ran more events and reached more students this year than ever before. In 2014 we focused on creating a strong Executive Committee and Advisory Board and on our deliverables which fit into our core organisational objectives.

In 2014 we expanded to two new states with events in Perth and Sydney and ran 11 events in Queensland reaching approximately 990 year nine and ten high school students. Queensland events were held in Dalby (two events), Miles, Chinchilla, Roma, Brisbane (four events) and Caboolture.

Highlights of the high school event program include:

  • The Brisbane program was sold out in March
  • Brisbane schools reported changes in subject selection after attending our events including
    • School 1 – Engineering Technology class increased from 0 to 7 girls
    • School 2 – Engineering Technology class increased from and 17 to 38 girls
    • School 3 – Physics class increased from 8 to 20 girls
  • South west Queensland events were hugely successful, attracting 291 students from across the region, representing a 137% increase on 2013 events
  • Perth had the highest conversion of 75% from no to a yes when considering a career in engineering
  • Sydney was our biggest event with 140 students attending

Engineering Change by ‘creating a vision and getting people and getting people on board'

By Catherine Fox

Sometimes influence is hard to measure but Felicity Briody can almost see it happening in front of her eyes when she talks to school students about a career in engineering.

A water resource engineer, Briody was a Young Leader winner in the inaugural 100 Women of Influence awards in 2012 for her work setting up the not-for-profit education group, Power of Engineering, when she was 25 years old.

Launching with events in just a handful of Queensland schools, and with support from Queensland University of Technology and the state government, the Power of Engineering was co-founded with colleague Jill Kenny.

Power of Engineering Goes National!

On Friday April 4, the first Western Australia Power of Engineering event took place at Curtin University in Perth, where female high school students will be inspired about engineering. They participated in a selection of workshops, site visits and empowering speakers.

Power of Engineering Co-Founder and President Felicity Briody said the Perth event is the first of many events and workshops planned for Western Australia that aim to squash the perception that a career in engineering is all about maths and hard hats and prove that it has the power to creatively change the world.

“Many perceptions are attached to engineering that often discourage people to consider it as an exciting career, so we have designed these events to help challenge the perception, showcase what engineering is really about and prove that it’s an innovative and creative profession that can shape the world,” she said.

“We’ve held over 20 events throughout Queensland and Victoria in the past two years and are thrilled to be expanding Power of Engineering events to launch in Western Australia. Western Australia’s engineering environment is very similar to that of Queensland, and we see it as a key part of our growth plan.”

The Perth event will commence with a welcome address to students by Western Australia’s Former Chief Scientist Lynn Beazley, who was recently inducted into the WA Science Hall of Fame and holds over 30 years of experience.

The event will also feature site visits to two locations, including the GE Information Centre in Perth where students will be exposed to real life day-to-day engineering, as well as participate in interactive workshops where they can try problem solving in areas such as civil and water engineering.

Two empowering industry guest speakers address the students, including Woodside Energy’s Environmental Engineer Katrina Bukauskas who will discuss her experiences as an environmental engineer in the oil and gas sector and the opportunities she has encountered in her career such as volunteering in Engineers Without Borders.

Bukauskas said she is passionate about Power of Engineering and understands the importance of encouraging people to consider engineering as a career path is significant.

“When I was a high school student no one ever told me what opportunities I had to consider but I chose engineering after my physics teacher made the suggestion in the second half of year 12. I’m passionate about Power of Engineering because it gives girls just like me the opportunity to fully appreciate their options so they can make informed decisions about their future,” she said.

“Women offer diversity of thought and operating styles, which help to balance out teams making them more effective and efficient. Also engineering is a well-paid, challenging and diverse career option that provides numerous pathways for anyone to follow and young women should not be missing out.”

Thank you to the whole team in Perth who made this event a success! We are looking forward to more events in Western Australia later this year and beyond.

Power of Engineering Goes West!

Power of Engineering Inc. delivered 5 exciting events in regional Queensland schools during the months of October and November, 2013. The events were held in Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles, and Roma, taking the power of engineering message into the Western Downs Regional Council and Maranoa Council areas for the first time. Fantastic speakers from diverse backgrounds shared their experiences as engineers, answered questions, and engaged with the students in workshops designed to reflect the innovative, creative, and sustainability focus on changing the world with the power of engineering.

The event programs also included site tours, or alternatively – sites came to classroom in the form of a new and exciting Industry Experience. Students were split into 5 different engineering discipline teams, where roles and responsibilities were explored and finally – the students put their “hard hats” on, and helped to solve a real-life crisis on a Coal Seam Gas Field!

The events were run as part of the CSG Industry Schools Program, and were proudly supported by Arrow Energy, Australia Pacific LNG, QGC and Santos GLNG.

Candy Connection

Power of Engineering Inc. has discovered the power of candy! During the recent events held in regional south-west Queensland, students and keynote speakers were thanked with personalized Power of Engineering Candy. The delicious purple-power hard candy was spotted out-and-about in the local community by a student-parent, who recognised the unmistakable sweets in a jar that belonged to a keynote speaker. The parent reported that her daughter had attended the event that day and was inspired to consider a career in Civil Engineering!

Connecting with local communities is an important part of every Power of Engineering Inc. event. Event organisers engage local caterers and transport providers, and support the local businesses through purchasing materials, meals, and accommodations when required.

If you hear of an event near you and your business would like to work with Power of Engineering Inc., please email info@powerofengineering.org.
